The first article I ever read that sort of rounded up all the popular "punk rock" bands in England in '77-'78 described The Stranglers as "been around too long to be punk" and as an "angry psychedelic band". Naturally I had to check them out and the first record of theirs I came across was Black & White. Immediately blown away, I think I even bought an 8-track of it. I later found out that their reputation was way worse than any punk band bar the Sex Pistols but The Stranglers had been nastier longer. This music has balls and they're dangling perilously close to your face...

Well, I guess we better get to it...how many people here today haven't listened to anything resembling Heavy Metal since Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath? A show of hands? That many, huh? I understand completely- I was once where you are now. I mean, after Ozzy left, what was there left to listen to in the way of Hard Rock? Foghat? ZZ Top? Def Leppard? Judas Priest? Iron Maiden? To the kids who grew up listening to their big brother's Iron Maiden records they were the freakin' Beatles, in terms of influence. I heard all this stuff when it was new- I've been working all my post-high school life at record stores (until recently that is) and well, Hair Metal just didn't cut it for me. I missed Black Sabbath. The closest thing to it I found was Hawkwind (that's another story) and Blue Öyster Cult (I don't want to talk about it). I burned out on Zep after high school- every girl I knew had the whole catalog. That's the only reason any guy I knew had Led Zeppelin records- for the ladies...anyway, as the decades wore on I found other loud, aggressive music to listen to like the Ramones, Killing Joke, and all your Punk Classics. Eventually I heard the name Metallica and of all things, Carcass and set down to listen to them and was blown away. Some guys I worked with formed a thrash band (Coffin Grinder) and they blew me away. I had been in bands for years but they were all rock'n'roll, technically speaking. I was saying to myself, "This is what metal has become, post-Grunge? I've been missing out!" It turns out it had been happening all through the 80s too. Now you may be saying to yourself, "He worked in record stores all that time and he never heard this shit?!?" Well, no matter how independent some of these stores were, metal was almost never played after the second Van Halen lp came out (wonder why?)- that stuff was for 15-year-olds, y'know? While it is true that teenagers love their metal if they are exposed to it, the current state of Metal is a very diverse and complex one and there's much more for young & old adults to appreciate and even love with a passion they might not have felt for a while, especially if you play guitar, which I do. I mean, if you ever liked loud guitars and obnoxious attitudes in Rock, then this stuff's for you. It's challenging. The great thing about it all now is- there's lots of metal bands now that don't ever sing about workin' for the weekend and how it feels like the very first time- they're talking about death, drugs, politics, Satan and outer space just like...Black Sabbath! So, what was the point of all this? If you raised your hand, nothing you have ever experienced will prepare you for Blackened Death Metal band Impetuous Ritual's Relentless Execution Of Ceremonial Excrescence, an album that indulges heavily in under-production, which means the first two Velvet Underground records will sound pristine to you afterwards. On first listen you will be hard pressed to even make out what they're playing but at least check out the first track- the guitar tone is chilling (also recommended are tracks 5 & 8). I'm really hitting you over the head with this one, so beware. Anyone who has ever known abject terror will like this record. They are coming to El Paso soon and i'm hoping they add a date in Austin or even Houston, because it's an 8-10 hour drive to El Paso from here. Now, are there any questions?...

This is not Impetuous Ritual, this is for the ladies. Enjoy it while you can, I don't think I can handle looking at it for long...I mean, I'd rather look at this...

Just a sneaky li'l daytime post...well, it was daylight when I started.

I ran across the above photo online recently and remembered I had seen it in an issue of Circus back in the day- I started picking up this mag in high school and then put it down again after discovering Creem, but be that as it may...I then realized I might still have that ish packed away somewhere. I didn't find it but I found this one...can you tell i'm excited about their plans for 2012? I just hope Rick Rubin doesn't fuck with the formula, so to speak...

I'm excited about the possibilities this blog presents me with, a chance to share my record & mp3 collection and mouth off about it, so naturally I was wondering what I was going to start with. Let's keep things simple- In the late 60s there was a groundswell of popular interest & indeed, fascination with all things occult, and Coven were there. Soon, however, Satanism and witchcraft were being blamed for the appearance of bogeymen like Charles Manson and his followers, the hippies started having bum trips and being Born Again and by the late 70s public opinion started to reflect the creeping conservatism that real demons from Hell like Ronald McReagan were exploiting to further their aims, which consisted of No Sex Before Marriage, No More Recreational Drugs But Drink All The Booze And Smoke All The Cigarettes You Want, as well as All Your Money Is Belong To Us. Satanism is the most misunderstood philosophy ever (not religion, Christians invented that) but what can you expect, fundamentalist Christians are very intolerant people and are ever afraid of the things that don't fit their plans for World Domination, not that they have a hope in um, Hell of achieving that, unless blowing everything to kingdom come seems like a good alternative. But hey, this is supposed to be a party and this is a demonically delicious proggy pop record from the late 60s when there was a groundswell of popular interest & indeed, fascination with all things occult, and...

Yep, it's a sign from beyond all right...the day I decide to start my musick blog I find out that Black Sabbath are reuniting for a 2012 tour and a new record & that Portal, my most favorite Blackened Death Metal band in the whole wide world is about to finish their new record & vocalist The Curator has a horrifyingly new stage persona prepared. If only they would return to the U.S. this year, specifically Texas of course. What would be the likelihood?...
